Would you like to run the Virgin Money London Marathon in 2019 on behalf of the Canal & River Trust? We’ve been allocated a limited number of spaces in this incredible event, and we’re keen to hear from keen runners who would like to take part and help raise vital funds to help make life better by the water.

Plan your route

Whatever your level of running ambition – whether you’re training for an organised event or just getting started – the flat surfaces and convivial atmosphere of a canal towpath can give you just the boost you need.

‘I run along the Kennet & Avon Canal, the stretch from Bradford-on-Avon to Bath,’ says production editor and keen canal runner Dave Perrett. ‘It’s busy with cyclists, walkers and runners near the town and city, but when you get out into the countryside, you can be all alone.’

Dave started running along that stretch in 2012, but knows it well as a walker and cyclist since the 1990s when it was reopened.

‘It’s close to home, which makes it easy, but I’ve always had an affinity for canals and in particular this stretch,’ he says. ‘I spent a lot of time here with my dad over the years, so it brings back good memories. The Dundas Aqueduct is a particular highlight on my usual route.’

According to Dave, the towpath is a popular place for runners in the region. There are plenty of flat routes to choose from in the area and, for more ambitious runners, there are no shortage of hills for the more ambitious.

If you’re particularly keen, you could try the 13-mile Two Tunnels route in and around Bath, which includes a good stretch along the Kennet and Avon Canal and takes in – as the name would suggest – two tunnels: Devonshire Tunnel at Bloomfield and the Combe Down Tunnel. If that sounds too daunting, you can opt to run a shorter section, such as from the town centre and out to Monkton Combe via through the mile-long tunnel under Combe Down.

Whichever you opt for, you can reward yourself at the Wheelwrights Arms in Monkton Combe or, with a short detour south, a hearty pub lunch at the Hope and Anchor in Midford. Though you might need to run back into to town to burn off the extra calories.
