Thank you to all our Friends who have taken the time to respond to our Waterfront survey. By telling us your views, you’re helping us to ensure we deliver a great experience for our supporters, as well as informing our work to benefit our canals and rivers.
We’re still analysing your responses, but we’d like to share some of our headline findings so far. We’re really interested in discovering more about what our Friends like to do and read about. We hope you feel the same.
Visiting the canal
Before lockdown, almost half of our survey responders visited a canal or towpath at least once a week. Our attractions most visited by Friends are the Anderton Boat Lift in Cheshire and Foxton Locks in Leicestershire.
Your favourite canal activities include:
• Wildlife and birdwatching
• Visiting a canalside pub or restaurant
• Sitting and relaxing
Of all the main social media platforms, our Friends are most likely to be found on Facebook.
Our Friends have a varied range of interests, but we’d like to highlight these three which scored highly in our survey:
• Things happening in my local area
• Environmental and ethical issues
• Local community matters
Following on from this, the range of content our survey responders would like to see in Waterfront is understandably broad, but many of you have expressed a particular interest in canal history and heritage. This is a fascinating area which opens up many possibilities for articles. Definitely food for thought!
Thank you once again for taking part in our survey and helping us to care for our 2,000 miles of canals and rivers. Your support is very important to us.
